There is nothing more pleasurable than floating a river!
Paddle the Fox, a larger river rich in the history of the fur trading era. It was the major link for fur traders from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi. It is one of the few rivers in the nation that flows north. Efforts are underway to improve the river and preserve its history. Canoeist & Kayakers can retrace the steps of Pere Marquette. To do so, "put in" the Fox River on Cty Hwy O, follow the river down through Buffalo Lake to Montello, portage over the dame and paddle into Lake Puckaway. Along this route, you'd see much of the same landscape the Marquette saw over 300 years ago. Wildlife abounds along the riverbanks and marshes throughout this trip, which - if take slowly will usually last several days.
The Montello River from Harrisville to Montello is a challenge to those who like the twisting and turning of the river. Surprisingly good fishing can also be found on a slow ride down the river in a canoe.
Both the Germania and Grand River Marshes offer unique paddling opportunities, especially for those who enjoy the solitude of the pristine beuty of nature is preserved in both marshes - outboard motors are banned, so there is little to disturb the quiet of these areas.
Winding its way through 30 miles of our county is one of the state's most famous trout streams, The Mecan, is a fantastic river to paddle. The current is lively and the clear sparkling water will entice you. The course of the Mecan is a bird watcher’s and photographer’s heaven. In the heart of the sandhill crane nesting area, you will be surrounded by many different species of birds, as well as deer, beaver, muskrats and other animals. South of Germania, the Mecan widens, losing some of its speed, but offering top fishing for many species. More than one day of paddling fun can be has, as there are many town road bridges, public landings, and public hunting and fishing grounds where you may put in and take out your canoe or kayak.
Another prime and quiet stream is the lower Neenah, below Oxford. Offers good trout fishing and much wildlife viewing as it meanders into the Fox River.
Mecan River Outfitters & Lodge provides canoe or kayak, paddles, personal flotation devices, and transportation both ways. They go over a river map with you, planning a trip that best suits you. You set the pace; the choice is yours. Minimum trip is two hours with options for all day or overnight.
Rendevous Paddle & Sports provides canoe or kayak down The Fox in Montello from a 1.5 to 5 hour trip. They also offer Tubing trips which is a great all day or half day fun for a whole group!
